Halloween is a fun and festive occasion for both kids and adults. No matter your age, it is important that everyone is happy, healthy and most importantly, safe on Halloween. At Williams and McDaniel Property Management, we want everyone to dress up and enjoy this spooky season so we've put together some Halloween safety tips that will be helpful for all.
Parents
When it comes time to pick your children's Halloween costume, opt for something without a mask. Masks can reduce visibility and might make it more of a challenge for kids to stick with you or their designated groups. A better option is hypoallergenic, non-toxic makeup. To avoid allergic reactions, test out makeup in a small area a few days before the big dress up. Purchase or make costumes with light-colored materials, and remember to add pieces of reflective tape to their costume as well as yours to ensure both of you are visible. You should also carry a flashlight while trick-or-treating and instruct the little ones to walk and not run from house to house. Place your child's name, address and phone number on the inside of their costume and instruct them to use this information if they become separated from you at any point.
Street Safety
Although the streets will be filled with costumes and people, it is still important to follow road and street safety rules. Whenever possible, walk on the sidewalk or the side of the road facing traffic. While you might want to visit a particular house on the other side of the street, don't crisscross back and forth across the street. Start on one side of the street and work your way up until you reach the other side. Follow the same rules you would every other day and make sure to look both ways before crossing the street and use established crosswalks whenever they are available to you.
Trick-or-Treating Alternatives
If you're looking to get away from the traditional trick-or-treating or would rather not have your kids out late, there are a variety of events that will give you your dose of Halloween spirit a little earlier. Local community centres and shopping centres are known to offer Halloween night activities and trick-or-treat nights in a more contained area. Another great option is to plan a Halloween-themed night at home with friends, movies, games and treats.
Enjoy Halloween this year and stay safe by making note of these tips. At Williams and McDaniel, we wish our current and prospective residents a happy, safe and treat-filled Halloween
